The difference between reactive and pigment paints is not just a matter of cost; it determines washing fastness, hand-feel, environmental impact and color progression over time. Here's what you need to know as a brand.<\/p>\n<h2>Dyeing process 1: Reactive dyeing (for cellulose)<\/h2>\n<p>The gold standard for <strong>cotton, viscose and linen<\/strong>. The dye forms a covalent bond with the cellulose fiber \u2014 that is, the color becomes part of the fiber itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excellent washing fastness (grade 4\u20135 out of 5)<\/li>\n<li>Deep, vibrant colors possible<\/li>\n<li>Hand feel remains soft<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High water consumption (60\u2013100 L per kg of fabric)<\/li>\n<li>Salt use in the dyeing process \u2014 wastewater treatment required<\/li>\n<li>Not suitable for synthetic fibres<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Dyeing process 2: Pigment paints<\/h2>\n<p>Pigment adheres to the outside of the fiber via a binder \u2014 similar to paint on a wall. Works on virtually any fiber, including blended fabrics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lower water consumption than reactive dyeing<\/li>\n<li>Suitable for mixed fibers and synthetics<\/li>\n<li>Vintage look achievable (colours for character)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lower washing fastness (grade 3\u20134)<\/li>\n<li>Fabric feels slightly stiffer<\/li>\n<li>Less suitable for very deep or dark colors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Dyeing process 3: Dispersion dyeing (for polyester)<\/h2>\n<p>The only way to <strong>polyester<\/strong> can be colored deeply and washfast. The dye penetrates under high temperature (130 \u00b0C) and presses into the fiber.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excellent color fastness on polyester<\/li>\n<li>Resistant to UV and washing<\/li>\n<li>No color loss over time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High energy requirement (heating up to 130 \u00b0C)<\/li>\n<li>Not suitable for natural fibres<\/li>\n<li>Wastewater contains components that are more difficult to degrade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Dyeing process 4: Digital textile printing<\/h2>\n<p>The latest generation: inkjet technology sprays pigment or reactive ink directly onto the fabric, based on a digital file. Polyester \u2192 dispersion. Mixed fiber \u2192 pigment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What volume<\/strong> Below 200 meters \u2192 digital level crossings. Above 500 meters \u2192 conventional paint is almost always cheaper.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Which sustainability claim<\/strong> Digital is the lowest in water consumption, followed by pigment. Reactive gives the most beautiful colors but the highest environmental impact (without ZLD treatment).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>What we recommend<\/h2>\n<p>We often combine for brands in the construction phase <strong>pigment paints for basic colors<\/strong> (lower risk, lower MOQ) with <strong>digital printing for signature pieces<\/strong> (creative freedom, low minimum purchase).
