Sustainability in the textile industry is no longer a marketing side issue — it has become a commercial prerequisite. Major buyers, EU regulations and critical consumers force brands to produce demonstrably responsibly. In this article we explain which certifications really matter, which pitfalls you should avoid and how you can move towards circular production step by step.

Why sustainability really counts

The European CSRD Directive and the upcoming Digital Product Passport force brands to be transparent across the entire value chain from 2027. Waiting for these rules to be active means falling behind. Anyone who makes their chain more sustainable now will build a commercial advantage that will become increasingly important in the next five years.

The most important certifications at a glance

GOTS—Global Organic Textile Standard

The gold standard for organic textiles. GOTS covers the entire chain: from organic cultivation to ecological processing, social working conditions and chemical management. For brands that

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Guarantees that the end product does not contain harmful substances. Not the same as organic — a polyester shirt can be OEKO-TEX certified. Good for consumer safety, not for ecological claims.

GRS—Global Recycled Standard

Verifies the recycled content (≥20% for the basic claim, ≥50% for the GRS logo). Indispensable if you process rPET, recycled wool or cotton.

BCI—Better Cotton Initiative

Not an organic standard, but an improvement program for conventional cotton farmers. Acceptable as entry level, not sufficient for a real sustainability claim.

OCS—Organic Content Standard

Only verifies the percentage of biological material in the final product — without the full chain coverage of GOTS. Lighter stand, lower costs, lower claim value.

The five pillars of circular production

  1. Long life design. Timeless silhouettes, robust finish, repairable construction.
  2. Mono material where possible. Mixed fibers (e.g. cotton-polyester) are difficult to recycle. Choose 100% material wherever possible.
  3. Produce locally or regionally. CO₂ footprint of transport is significant. Production within the EU makes a significant difference compared to Asia.
  4. Take-back program. Offer customers a way to return end-of-life clothing for recycling.
  5. Transparent communication. Better to be honest about what you can do now than to make claims that you cannot fulfill (greenwashing fine: up to 4% global turnover under EU rules).

Practical first steps

Many brands are paralyzed by the scale of what

  • Step 1: Ask your fabric supplier for OEKO-TEX certificates for all your existing qualities. Often you already have it — you just don't communicate it.
  • Step 2: Replace at least one basic fabric per collection with a recycled or organic alternative.
  • Step 3: Invest in OEKO-TEX or GOTS certified labels and hang tags. The visual evidence on the garment costs more than ten Instagram posts.

The role of your clothing partner

Not every producer can process GOTS orders — the certification requires chain transparency up to the sewing workshop. Ask your clothing partner explicitly which certifications he carries internally and which documentation he supplies as standard. We supply GOTS, OEKO-TEX and GRS documentation as standard with every order where this applies.
